How to Measure for Dog Harnesses

Submit measurements BEFORE ordering harness. Print this page as a reference.

This section describes how to  measure your dog for a harness, whether you are looking for an Escape Artist walking harness, X-Back pulling harness, or Puppy harness.  We can't determine what size your dog requires with only the breed type and weight because dogs come in all shapes and sizes - even within breeds!

You must take the time to fill out the measurement form below to avoid returns/exchanges and to provide a more comfortable fit for your dog the first time.  Please submit the measurement form BEFORE you place your order online (if you submit measurements at the time of order we can't guarantee that we will catch the two emails in time to give you the right fit needed for your dog).

During this busy season we try to respond to all measurement inquiries within two working days and are more than happy to help you determine the best fitting harness for your dog based on the measurements we are given. Thank you!

Measuring tips:

  • Use a cloth measuring tape or a string. (If you use a string, mark the measurement on the string and compare it to a ruler for accuracy).
  • You want the tape or string snug, but not tight.
  • Measure the dog, not the fur. If the dog has thick fur, dig through their hair to find the proper reference points.
  • Take the measurements three times. The results will vary slightly, but there should not be large discrepancies, or you can assume you’re not measuring correctly. Submit an average of the three measurements.
  • The dog must be standing squarely on all fours, with their back straight.
  • Have someone help you hold the dog while you measure.

How To Submit This Information:
Enter the measurements and your info in the form below and hit submit, enter measurements into the comments section at the end of your order or call us at 800/355-5575.

# 1 Neck size:
Start at B (at the top of the breastbone located under the throat of the dog). You can feel this as an indentation below the dog's throat.

Pull the tape snugly along the dog's neck to A (at the front of the shoulders). Run your hand along the back of the dog's neck until you feel the boney shoulder area in the center of his back.

You need to measure from the center of the top of the breastbone to the center of the back in front of the shoulder area. DOUBLE THIS MEASUREMENT. Don't measure all the way around the dog's neck because you'll increase the potential for error. Measure this 3 times and then record this.

# 2 Back Length:
Start at A (at the front of shoulders) and measure to C (at the base of the tail). Measure 3 times and record.

# 3 Breastbone to Base of Tail:
Start at B (at the top of the breastbone) and measure down between the front legs. Bring the tape between the front legs and along the ribcage at a 45-degree angle to C (the base of the tail). Don't pull the tape really tight for this measurement because you want room for chest expansion. Measure 3 times and record.

# 4 Chest Expansion:
Measure from A (at the front of the shoulders) to D (the last rib). This measurement keeps the side straps below and behind the chest for maximum lung expansion.  Measure 3 times and record.

# 5 Collar Size (E):
Measure the circumference around the dog's neck where the collar sits on your dog. (This helps us double-check your #1 measure).

# 6 Weight of the Dog:
Please don't guess. Weigh your dog if possible or reference your last visit to the veterinarian. The easiest method to weigh your dog is to weigh yourself on a scale, lift the dog and record the new weight. The difference is dog's weight.

#7 Breed of the Dog:

#8 Age of Dog:

#9 Sex of Dog:
